Using music to inspire art

This Art and Design scheme of work introduces a creative drawing lesson inspired by music and the work of artist Paul Klee.

Children explore how music can influence the lines they draw as they vary control, pressure and materials. Klee often responded to music in his work, using bold colours, playful shapes and expressive lines.

Pupils listen to different pieces of music and create a large collaborative artwork, taking a line for a walk across the paper. Before beginning, they might practise drawing in the air with a finger, responding to how the music makes them feel. Children will choose from a range of materials and can experiment with tips, edges, pressure and line types.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Exploring line and shape unit. It helps pupils explore expression through music and drawing.
