Understanding and creating monuments

This Art and design scheme of work video introduce the concept of monuments and how to guide pupils in designing symbolic structures that commemorate a person, event or idea.

The video explains what a monument is and explores how artists use shapes, motifs and symbols to communicate meaning. Pupils might choose to commemorate themselves in their monument, a historical figure, a fictional event or even a story character. Instead of using text or statues, they’ll be challenged to represent their subject through visual symbols. The video demonstrates the design process, from choosing symbols and sketching ideas to adding colour using pencils. Pupils are free to make their own creative choices, making each monument unique.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Architecture unit. It provides clear guidance to support children in developing their own meaningful monument designs.
