The importance of observation
This Art and design scheme of work video introduces children to the importance of observation in drawing, in improving their ability to see and record detail accurately.
Children begin by learning that observation is more than just looking. It’s about noticing shape, texture, colour and the way light interacts with objects. They’re reminded not to draw from memory, but to look closely—again and again—as they work. The video demonstrates how different marks can suggest different textures: jagged lines for something rough, flowing lines for smooth surfaces, and light strokes for soft or delicate textures.
They then take part in an observation relay. In this activity, children take turns to add detail to a shared drawing, refining the shapes, textures and tones each time. This encourages accuracy and close looking in a fun, collaborative way. Later, children apply these skills in individual observational drawings.
This video supports Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Developing drawing skills unit. The unit helps pupils refine their drawing through close observation and thoughtful mark making.
