Supporting emotional awareness through geographical fieldwork

This Geography scheme of work teacher video introduces a Year 1/2 lesson that combines fieldwork, map skills, and emotional reflection. Pupils explore their school environment, identifying how different places make them feel and recording these responses on a map using emoji-style symbols.

Working in small, adult-supervised groups, pupils visit the locations they’ve chosen and take photos that they can later present and talk about. They then plot their selected places on a simple aerial sketch map using emotion symbols, reinforcing their understanding of space, location and representation.

The lesson can be completed outdoors, or adapted for indoor learning using a map as a visual aid if access to outside areas is limited. Teachers are encouraged to use tools such as the satellite view on Google Maps to create the base for sketch maps, adding or adjusting features as needed to reflect the current school grounds.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork and mapping resources, designed to introduce pupils to geography in meaningful, relatable ways.
