Introducing colour

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces colour as one of the six formal elements in art.

Pupils will learn that the three primary colours can be mixed together to create secondary colours . So, with just three colours, they can make three more. Working in pairs, each child is given two pieces of Play-Doh in each of the primary colours. They start by mixing red and blue to discover it creates purple. Then they continue to explore mixing other combinations to make orange and green. Once all the secondary colours have been made, pupils keep their Play-Doh colour balls ready for the next session.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Colour splash unit. It introduces colour through practical exploration that builds a strong base for further art skills.
