This Art and design scheme of work video supports teachers in guiding pupils to create batik fabric designs, inspired by their abstract animal drawings. Children will learn a simplified version of the traditional batik process using PVA glue and acrylic paint. This method introduces them to a new textile technique while developing their creative confidence and understanding of pattern design.
Plain cotton or calico fabric works best. The video offers alternative material sources. Glue is applied directly to the fabric and must dry before painting, so the process is split across three lessons. The video explains options for applying the glue and important steps to ensure the fabric does not shift.
Children paint over their dried glue patterns, then wash the glue away in the final lesson to reveal their designs. The result is a vibrant, handmade batik-style textile.
