Creating a box loom

This Art and design scheme of work video shows how to create a box loom, ready for weaving projects future lessons.

It explains that a box loom has warp threads running in both directions and viewers through the setup process step by step. Pupils will need a sturdy box, pencil, ruler, scissors, string and tape. They start by marking evenly spaced points around the box to help spread out the warp threads. Using small objects like a rubber to measure can make this easier. The video shows how to press small dents into the card using a ruler, helping the string stay in place. Children then tape the end of the string inside the box and wrap it gently around, resting it in each dip without pulling too tightly. A tail of string is left for tying at the end. The process is repeated in the opposite direction, creating a grid of warp threads.

Once the string is tied and taped underneath the box, the loom is ready to use.
