French art and language

This French scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Key stage 2 pupils develop spontaneous speaking and broaden cultural awareness through the work of Henri Matisse. It explores how to use mystery word activities to identify cognates, practise alphabetical ordering and build descriptive phrases, before moving into a paired role-play where pupils ask for and use shapes to create an animal composition. The video demonstrates each step, from introducing vocabulary through thinking skills challenges to guiding pupils in transactional speaking tasks.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Language teacher video resources. It simplifies the process, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to support the pupils in combining language learning with cultural appreciation. With opportunities to role-play as l’artiste and l’assistant, practise polite requests and experiment with spontaneous language, the lesson makes speaking purposeful and creative, while linking French vocabulary to Matisse’s artistic style.
