Creating camouflaged 3D animals

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a cross-curricular lesson where Key stage 2 pupils design and create three-dimensional animals that use camouflage to survive in their environments. It explores how to combine scientific understanding of adaptation with creative making, as pupils invent creatures and build models from recycled junk materials. The video demonstrates each step, from recording design ideas in sketchbooks to selecting suitable materials, assembling body parts, and refining features to show how the animal feeds, travels, and protects itself.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS1 Art and design resources. It equips teachers to guide pupils in blending creativity with scientific thinking, encouraging problem-solving, adaptation, and imaginative design while producing inventive 3D models.
