Understanding art

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a unit which begins children’s journey in understanding art as a subject of study and personal expression.

The video explains that, across this scheme, pupils will explore big questions such as ‘What is art?’ and ‘Why do people make it?’. In Year 1, children start by thinking about their own ideas of what art means, recognising that it can be made in many different ways by all kinds of people. The video encourages teachers to make this learning personal. Inviting a visitor to share a creative hobby or profession helps children understand that art isn’t only made by famous people or found in galleries. It also introduces the concept of craft, helping children see the connection between craft and art.

Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own creative experiences and begin to see themselves as artists. They also explore a range of art forms beyond drawing and painting, learning that everyone can have different views about what makes something art.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Woven wonders unit.
