Iron Age trade and bartering
This History video supports teachers in introducing pupils to key developments in trade during Iron Age Britain. It explores barter as a system of exchange, including Britain’s role in exporting iron, cattle, dogs and enslaved people in exchange for imported goods such as wine, olive oil and glassware. The video highlights how historians use sources such as the Kahpal log boat to draw conclusions about Iron Age transport and trade, and how coinage gradually replaced barter by the end of the period.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History Year 3 and 4 videos. It supports teachers in leading practical historical inquiry through image analysis and interactive learning, while offering guidance on discussing sensitive topics such as slavery with care and context.
