Interpreting the Bible today

This Religion and worldviews video supports teachers in helping children understand how many Christians use and interpret the Bible. The lesson builds on previous learning about how the Bible was written, collected, and widely used, and explores how Christians read it for guidance in modern life. Children learn that understanding context, symbolism, and meaning is key to making sense of Bible stories today. Using the story of Bartimaeus, the video models four common approaches to interpreting scripture: literal, hidden, moral, and spiritual.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews resources – Bible. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to explore the Bible using English skills such as inference, questioning, and summarising. Teachers are encouraged to prompt discussion about language, setting, and meaning, helping children explore how passages may offer moral guidance, illustrate faith, or reveal beliefs about God. The video shows how exploring scripture in this way can help pupils reflect on how some Christians apply Bible teachings in their daily lives.
