Explicit and implicit evidence

In this History video, teachers are introduced to the skills needed to help pupils interpret historical sources.

The video highlights the difference between implicit and explicit information, shows how to identify an author’s viewpoint and explains how to assess reliability and bias. Teachers see how different types of sources, including portraits, posters and census materials, can be interpreted in multiple ways to support well-reasoned conclusions. Practical strategies help the children analyse evidence thoughtfully, develop their own interpretations and make connections between sources. The video ensures teachers feel confident in guiding the children to engage critically with historical material, strengthening enquiry skills and fostering independent, evidence-based thinking.

This teacher video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills videos, designed to build teachers’ confidence and skills in supporting the children to interpret sources and develop evidence-based views.
