Understanding population distribution and density
This Geography video equips teachers with the subject knowledge and strategies to confidently introduce population distribution and density. It explains the difference between how people are spread across continents (distribution) and how tightly packed populations are in specific locations (density), using visual aids such as maps and pie charts.
Teachers are guided in helping pupils identify densely and sparsely populated areas, plot global population growth over time using scaffolded line graphs and reflect on future population trends. The video also encourages evaluation of why people choose certain environments, connecting geographical learning with cross-curricular maths skills and supporting pupils’ critical thinking about global development and sustainability.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s sustainability collection, which support teachers in developing pupils’ understanding of real-world environmental challenges.
