Why do mountains follow tectonic lines?

This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in building on prior knowledge of the Earth’s structure by introducing plate boundaries and how they contribute to mountain formation. The video helps clarify misconceptions, such as the difference between continents and tectonic plates, using visual resources from the lesson to support explanation.

Teachers are introduced to the three main types of plate boundaries—convergent, divergent, and transform—and how each is responsible for creating different types of mountains; fold, volcanic and fault-block mountains.

While pupils are not expected to memorise technical terms, the video supports teachers in guiding pupils to understand the physical processes and in making links between plate boundaries and mountain distribution globally.
