Why do mountains follow tectonic lines?

In this Geography video, teachers are supported in building on prior knowledge of the Earth’s structure by introducing plate boundaries and how they contribute to mountain formation. The video helps clarify misconceptions, such as the difference between continents and tectonic plates, using visual resources from the lesson to support explanation.

Teachers are guided through the three main types of plate boundaries: convergent, divergent and transform. It explains how each is responsible for creating different types of mountains: fold, volcanic and fault‑block.

While pupils are not expected to memorise technical terms, the video supports teachers in helping the children understand the physical processes and in making links between plate boundaries and mountain distribution globally.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Earth systems videos. Designed to build teacher confidence, this video supports clear, layered explanation of abstract geographical concepts.
