Painting the giant spider model
This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils as they paint their giant spider sculpture.
Pupils begin by covering the entire sculpture with black paint. Once the black layer is dry, pupils apply the metallic paint. This is done using a sponge, and the key technique is dabbing, rather than dragging. The video shows how dabbing the paint lightly over the surface allows the black to show through in places, especially in deeper areas. This creates a shadowed, textured effect that makes the sculpture look more solid and metallic.
Once finished, pupils stand back to admire their work. Teachers will lead a discussion about the sculpture’s construction, how realistic it now looks, and where it could be displayed for others to enjoy.
