Using shapes to draw

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a drawing skills lesson where Key stage 2 pupils learn how to use guidelines to sketch geometric shapes more accurately. Building on the previous lesson, pupils develop their ability to identify the 2D and 3D shapes that make up everyday objects, such as circles and rectangles in a drinks can. The video demonstrates each stage, from sketching simple outlines lightly and refining proportions to using boxes for lettering and details, before adding shading or colour to complete the drawing.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original LKS2 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in helping pupils build accuracy and confidence in drawing, showing how artists use guidelines to structure their work and develop observational skills.
