Fieldwork: Mapping rocks in the school grounds
In this Geography video, teachers are supported in delivering a practical fieldwork enquiry that allows the children to explore and identify different types of rocks around their school grounds. The lesson is designed to strengthen pupils’ map skills and understanding of the connection between geography and science.
Teachers are guided through preparation and execution of the fieldwork, including using a pre-labelled school map to plot rock locations, marking where rocks are found. The video demonstrates how to scaffold key skills such as map orientation, careful rock observation and the use of magnifying glasses and digital photography.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography enquiry videos, offering teachers everything they need to confidently deliver meaningful, investigative outdoor learning.
