Climate change and desertification
In this Geography video, teachers are supported in helping the children explore the growing threats to desert environments and how these challenges link to global climate change. The children examine the impact of rising temperatures, long-term droughts and extreme weather events, such as flash floods, reflecting on how these changes affect desert ecosystems.
The video explains how climate change contributes to the expansion of deserts, known as desertification, by reducing soil moisture and limiting vegetation growth. Teachers are guided in exploring a range of threats, including deforestation, renewable energy developments, mining, overgrazing and intensive farming. While challenges continue to grow, the video also highlights positive human responses such as crop rotation and planting drought-resistant species, prompting discussion on how individuals and communities can help address desertification.
This video is part of the Kapow Primary’s Geography video resources, which provide guidance and support to help teachers develop confidence and subject knowledge.
