Hemispheres and seasons: Latitude and longitude lines
This Geography scheme of work video equips teachers with the knowledge to teach pupils how lines of latitude and longitude shape the Earth’s climate zones and how to locate global coordinates. It explains how these invisible lines divide the planet and influence temperature, weather patterns, and seasons. The video highlights how to use four-digit grid references (e.g. 20°N, 80°E) to pinpoint locations and explains the differences between the tropical, polar, temperate, arid, Mediterranean and mountainous climate zones.
Teachers are supported in guiding children to understand why the Earth’s tilt causes opposite seasons in each hemisphere and how solar energy is more intense at the equator. A demonstration is included to visually model the planet’s orientation to the sun and how this affects climate and seasonality.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Map skills teacher videos. It simplifies key geographical knowledge so that pupils can confidently describe climate zones and accurately locate places using global coordinates.
