Understanding gears and motion

This Design and technology scheme of work video supports teachers in introducing gear systems, helping them guide children in exploring how gears work and how to make them using a range of materials. It explains how gear teeth interlock to change motion, speed or direction and demonstrates four hands-on techniques for building gear prototypes using paper clips, modelling dough, corrugated cardboard and custom templates. The video also highlights common construction issues and how to evaluate the effectiveness of each method.

The video breaks down mechanical principles clearly so teachers feel confident and well prepared to support the children in investigating, building and testing gear systems in the lesson below.
