Exploring maps

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a lesson where pupils explore how artists are inspired by maps and create their own map to use throughout the unit.

The lesson begins with children comparing different types of maps. They sort them by given criteria to understand that maps can be functional or imaginative, and that some are artworks in their own right. Pupils then draw a map of a familiar journey, thinking carefully about what to include. Focussing on creativity and personal expression, rather than accuracy. Children focus on including what interests them, showing paths, shapes and colour in a way that reflects their experience. A range of drawing materials can help them explore their ideas further. In the second lesson, pupils will select a small section of their map to turn into felt.
