Connecting lines to form shapes
This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a lesson where pupils explore how connected lines can be used to form both regular and organic shapes.
The lesson begins by checking pupils can recognise familiar shapes in different orientations. Children are introduced to the word organic, which describes shapes that are free-form, without regular sides or angles. In the main task, children connect unfinished lines to create shapes. This open-ended activity encourages creativity and problem-solving, with no right or wrong answers. Some pupils may turn simple lines into imaginative animals or more complex forms. Pupils will learn how to use straight lines for geometric shapes and curved or varied lines for organic and abstract forms. Children then colour their shapes, with the option to explore a range of materials.
As they work, observe how they use pressure, control and direction, as this builds the foundation for more focused shading and colouring practice.
