Colour mixing and secondary colours

This Art and design scheme of work video supports Year 2 pupils to build on their experience of colour mixing by exploring secondary colours.

The lesson starts by revisiting primary colours and introducing secondary colours. Children are encouraged to notice how different combinations create slightly different results.

The video shows how to prepare for the activity using thick paper fixed inside a tray. The paper is dampened with a brush or sponge, and paint is added in two areas before tilting the tray to let the colours blend freely. Adding a little water to the paint helps it move more easily across the surface. Pupils take turns in pairs, with one managing the tray and the other preparing the paint. Children are reminded that the goal isn’t a finished painting but discovering how colours interact. This activity offers an opportunity to observe and assess their understanding of colour mixing.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 2 Life in colour unit.
