Creating installations from everyday objects

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a hands-on lesson where pupils create their own installation artworks by transforming everyday objects and furniture.

It encourages pupils to experiment, problem solve and work flexibly as they explore how scale, placement and materials can change how we see ordinary items. The video explains how children might wrap, combine or reposition objects in unexpected ways, using spaces like the hall or playground for larger-scale work. Guidance is given on setting clear ground rules for safety and managing resources, including how to move objects and share materials sensibly. It also includes tips for adapting the activity to suit different classes.

The lesson ends with a reflective activity on a piece by artist Cai Guo-Qiang, helping pupils consider how an artist’s life and culture can influence their work and message.
