Creating digital artwork
This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to the world of digital photography and creative image editing, inspired by artist Derek Oberteng. Known for his bold digital portraits taken and edited entirely on an iPhone, Oberteng’s colourful and playful work shows how simple tools can create powerful visual impact. In this lesson, children take on the role of creative designers by producing their own music album covers.
They’ll use props to set up compositions and take photographs that reflect their ideas. With opportunities to sketch out their ideas first, they are encouraged to explore composition, lighting, and backgrounds—both in and out of the classroom. The video guides teachers in supporting children through each step, from planning and taking photos to editing their images. Pupils will experiment with colour, filters and saturation to transform their photos into unique, eye-catching designs.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Photo opportunity unit. designed to build confidence in using digital tools, encourage creativity and help children understand how photography and design come together in real-world applications.
