Inquiry in history lessons

This  History scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Key stage 1 and 2 pupils ask and answer historical questions. It explores how to use overarching inquiry questions, the difference between open and closed questions, and how to support children in writing their own questions to drive investigation. The video demonstrates how to model questioning, encourage curiosity, and guide pupils in using evidence to form and test their ideas.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills resources. It simplifies the process, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to support the pupils in developing their questioning skills, engaging with inquiry, and investigating the past through meaningful questions in lessons like the ones below.

History, Lower key stage 2, Year 4, How have children’s lives changed?, Lesson 2: Why did Tudor children work and what was it like?

History, Upper key stage 2, Year 6, What can the census tell us about local areas?, Lesson 2: What can we learn about Victorian children from the census?
