Combining lines and shapes

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces two lessons which combine the formal elements of line and shape, taking inspiration from Paul Klee’s abstract portrait ‘Senecio’ to do so. Klee’s artwork is used to introduce the idea of abstract art. While not the main focus, this vocabulary helps children start recognising different styles of art.

Children begin to explore how simple shapes can be used to represent facial features, building on their confidence in identifying shapes in the world around them. This foundational drawing skill helps pupils map out a subject’s basic form, which they’ll build on as their drawing progresses. Each pupil uses a printed photograph of themselves or a provided printable, drawing directly over the image to choose shapes that best represent their features. Pencil is recommended so they can make changes, but larger versions can be completed with marker or crayon. This drawing will form a template for the next lesson’s portrait activity.
