Understanding continuity and change in history

In this History video, teachers are introduced to the skills needed to help pupils understand continuity and change as a historical concept.

The video shows how to distinguish between what has remained the same and what has changed over time, and how to investigate the reasons behind these developments. Teachers see how timelines can provide chronological overviews and support comparisons between periods, such as the Stone Age and Iron Age or the Greeks and the present, to identify patterns of continuity and change. Practical strategies help the children recognise developments, understand their impact, and build broader historical overviews, strengthening enquiry skills and historical thinking.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills resources, designed to build teachers’ confidence and skills in supporting the children to explore continuity and change over time.
