Exploring sketchpad tools

This Kapow Computing video supports teachers in guiding pupils through their second lesson using the free online art tool, Sketchpad. Following an introductory session where pupils explored basic functions, this lesson focuses on creating artwork linked to a chosen story theme, helping children develop accuracy in mouse control. The video demonstrates key tools including a variety of brush styles, adjustable thickness and colour options, and the use of gradients. Pupils are also introduced to the Clip Art library, learning how to search, resize, rotate and stamp images, as well as how to duplicate or align elements using the snap and select tools.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work – click. It equips teachers to build pupils’ digital literacy and creative confidence by modelling how to use digital tools purposefully. The lesson encourages independence and experimentation while embedding foundational computing skills such as drag-and-drop, right-click functions and using digital assets. It lays the groundwork for future lessons where pupils will apply their understanding to create artwork inspired by artists such as Kandinsky.
