Exploring seaside textures

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a sensory lesson where Key stage 2 pupils explore texture using sight and sound to imagine the seaside. Inspired by a Van Gogh painting, pupils use different materials to recreate the feel of sea, sand, boats, and breeze within their artwork. The video demonstrates each step, from setting the scene with sounds and imagery to selecting and applying textured items such as sand, fabric, or lentils, helping pupils represent different surfaces creatively.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS1 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in encouraging pupils to experiment with textures, justify artistic choices, and use imaginative responses to recreate environments, fostering sensory awareness and creativity.
