Architectural drawings

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces three common architectural drawing styles—perspective view, plan view and front elevation, which pupils will use to design their own buildings.

The video explains how each drawing type presents a different viewpoint. Pupils choose one of these styles to design a building, which could link to a school topic, but should be their own original idea.

They begin by imagining what their building will look like. Pupils are encouraged to develop their own original ideas and think carefully about the building’s purpose, who will use it, what materials it’s made from, and what it will include. Children are also encouraged to annotate their drawings and explore all three drawing types if time allows. When pupils are happy with their design, they can add detail in pen and colour. These drawing skills will be used in the next lesson, where pupils move on to designing a monument.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Architecture unit. giving teachers the tools to develop drawing and design confidence in the classroom.
