Exploring traditions and beliefs around welcoming new babies

This Religion and worldviews video equips teachers to lead pupils in exploring how families and communities welcome a new baby. It outlines non-religious naming ceremonies and introduces a range of practices, including Christian infant baptism, Muslim Aqiqah, Jewish Brit Milah and Brit Bat and Hindu traditions such as Jatakarma and Namakarana.

The video models strategies for facilitating discussion, encouraging pupils to notice similarities between ceremonies and prompting reflection on concepts such as promise, community, responsibility and belief. It also offers guidance on inviting pupils to share personal experiences when appropriate and on nurturing respectful, thoughtful dialogue about why many families choose ceremonies of commitment for their babies.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews teacher videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when exploring different beliefs, values and traditions in the classroom.
