Welcoming a baby ceremony

This Kapow Primary Religion and worldviews teacher video introduces the beliefs and practices that surround baby welcoming ceremonies in different religious and non-religious worldviews. It explores how families celebrate the arrival of a new baby, and what these ceremonies reveal about beliefs in God, community, commitment, and gratitude. The video highlights practices from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Humanist or non-religious perspectives, supporting teachers to identify common themes like promise-making, naming, and blessing.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews recourses – Family. It helps teachers prepare for a lesson in which pupils explore and compare different baby ceremonies. The video supports teachers in recognising key terms and symbolic actions such as the use of water in baptism, the sharing of food during Aqiqah, and the whispering of names or prayers in Jatakarma and Brit Bat. Teachers are guided in how to approach sensitive content in an age-appropriate way and how to encourage inclusive, respectful discussion that connects classroom learning to pupils’ lived experiences.
