Creating branching databases

This Computing video supports teachers in delivering an interactive and practical lesson focused on branching databases using the JIT5 website. Building on their knowledge of pictograms and charts, children now explore how to sort and classify data using yes/no questions. The lesson begins with a whole-class ‘Guess Who?’ style activity before pupils create their own branching databases using animals. This helps develop their understanding of classification and data organisation while reinforcing key scientific vocabulary.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing videos. It guides teachers through the steps needed to model and support pupils in creating their own branching databases, including advice on differentiation and how to correct errors. By combining digital skills with scientific language, the lesson builds towards the final session of the topic, where pupils will apply their data handling knowledge to design their own computerised invention.
