French verb families introduction
This French video introduces teachers to a grammar-based activity where pupils explore verbs in their infinitive form and learn to group them into families. Using picture prompts for common actions such as to sing, to dance, and to sleep, the lesson helps children identify that these are verbs and notice patterns in their endings. Pupils then use bilingual dictionaries to locate verbs, distinguish them from nouns, and sort them into the three main groups: -er, -ir, and -re, with -er verbs being the most common.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s French scheme of work – grammar. It supports language detective skills, dictionary use, and recognition of verb patterns, while laying the groundwork for future sentence-building. The structure also allows pupils to use infinitive verbs directly when talking about things they like to do, making the grammar both memorable and practical for classroom speaking activities.
