Representing data visually

This Computing video supports teachers in leading a creative and hands-on lesson where pupils use the JIT5 website to explore different ways of presenting data. Following their zoo animal observations from lesson one, children learn to create pictograms, tables and charts to visually represent the number of animals they saw. The lesson encourages pupils to tinker with digital tools, predict outcomes and choose how best to display their data, supporting computational thinking and critical discussion.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work – videos. It offers teachers step-by-step guidance for using JIT5 and demonstrates how to model pictograms, charts and tables clearly for pupils. With suggestions for supporting differentiation and fostering curiosity, the video provides the confidence to explore a range of data representations in an engaging way. The lesson sets the stage for the next session, where children will collect and represent their own data from a mini-beast hunt.
