Experimenting with paper to create 3D drawings

This Art and design scheme of work video supports a lesson where pupils will explore how paper can be shaped to make a three-dimensional drawing.

Pupils experiment with paper strips, using techniques such as folding, rolling, and cutting to create sculptural forms. The video explains how to stick shapes to the base and encourages pupils to share their tips and techniques with each other. Each group starts by copying a sample shape before moving on to design their own 3D pictures. These could be abstract arrangements, repeating patterns or even simple pictures made from shaped paper strips.

The video recommends offering a range of paper colours and strip widths and suggests an optional challenge of drawing patterns on the paper before shaping. Pupils are encouraged to try overlapping shapes, building on top of each other and using their imagination to create unique work.
