Using sentence builders effectively

This Spanish Kapow teacher video supports a lesson that introduces sentence builders as a key strategy for delivering comprehensible input in the language classroom. Based on Stephen Krashen’s theory, comprehensible input refers to language that is just beyond pupils’ current level, yet still accessible. Sentence builders provide this support by combining familiar vocabulary with new elements in a clear and structured format. Within the Kapow Primary scheme, these tables offer a scaffolded way to explore grammar, phonics and sentence structure. Children are encouraged to notice patterns, practise pronunciation, and build confidence with new sentence frames. Activities such as fast finger games or listening for comprehension give multiple opportunities for interaction, modelling and retrieval.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work – grammar. It shows how sentence builders go beyond simple vocabulary lists, offering a versatile classroom resource for reading, writing, speaking and listening. They model grammar in context and prepare pupils for independent sentence construction by reducing overload and building familiarity. With built-in audio and translation features, sentence builders help all learners access key content and understand how Spanish sentence structures compare to English. Used regularly, they promote creativity, confidence and enjoyment in language learning and ensure a smooth transition to Key Stage 3.
