Recognising and pronouncing the y/ll sounds in Spanish

In this Spanish phonics video, pupils explore the sound made by the letters ‘y’ and ‘ll’ — the ‘ʝ’ sound, similar to the English y in yes. Although it has two different spellings, the pronunciation is the same in most modern Spanish dialects.

Pupils are introduced to this voiced palatal sound through fun examples and guided mouth mechanics that focus on tongue and jaw movement. They practise listening for and producing the sound, developing confidence in spoken Spanish and recognising it within written words. The video includes clear modelling, repetition and sound-spotting tasks that reinforce pupils’ understanding of how one sound can have multiple spellings, supporting both decoding and pronunciation.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and develop their language skills.
