Recognising and pronouncing the Trilled ‘r’ in Spanish

In this Spanish phonics video, pupils are introduced to the iconic rolled ‘r’ sound, also known as the trill. The video explains how this distinctive phoneme appears with ‘rr’ in the middle of words or as a single ‘r’ at the beginning of a word or after consonants such as ‘n’, ‘l’ or ‘s’.

Pupils are guided through precise mouth mechanics, including tongue placement, airflow and relaxation, as they practise vibrating the tip of the tongue against the roof of the mouth. María models the sound clearly using fun analogies, such as engines and purring cats, along with tongue twisters and step-by-step articulation techniques. Pupils also practise identifying the sound in common words and contrast it with the softer tapped ‘r’ in words like verano.
