Spanish phonics – The soft 'd' sound

This Spanish scheme of work video introduces pupils to the soft /d/ sound — a gentler version of the English d that appears between vowels in Spanish words such as nada and dedo. The video helps pupils recognise and produce this subtler consonant accurately, building awareness of how Spanish sounds differ from English.

Through “mouth mechanics,” pupils practise placing the tip of the tongue lightly against the upper teeth while keeping airflow smooth and gentle. With modelling and repetition, they learn how to pronounce this sound clearly without over-articulating, especially in the middle of words.

The video also supports listening discrimination and highlights how the soft /d/ contributes to fluent, natural Spanish speech. Pupils practise identifying the sound in spoken examples and build confidence in their own pronunciation through guided activities.

This video is used to help pupils fine-tune their articulation of tricky consonants and develop authentic Spanish speaking skills.
