Recognising and pronouncing the letters ‘j’ and soft ‘g’ in Spanish

In this Spanish phonics video, pupils are introduced to the ‘j’ and soft  ‘g’ phoneme, a sound made in the back of the throat that may be unfamiliar to early learners. The video supports pupils in distinguishing and reproducing this sound correctly.

Pupils begin with guided mouth mechanics, learning to relax their jaw and engage the throat muscles for a gentle, breathy rasp – the Spanish jota. They practise the articulation carefully, supported by clear modelling, visual cues and repetition, building confidence in forming this tricky phoneme. A focused listening challenge helps pupils identify the sound within sample sentences, reinforcing spelling, pronunciation and auditory discrimination.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and develop their language skills.
