Spanish phonics – The 'b' and 'v' sounds

This Spanish scheme of work video helps pupils understand the subtle difference — or rather, the surprising similarity — between the Spanish ‘b’ and ‘v’ sounds. Unlike English, Spanish speakers pronounce both letters using a similar voiced bilabial sound, making them nearly indistinguishable in most contexts.

Through demonstration and repetition, pupils are introduced to this shared phoneme and guided through “mouth mechanics” to practise forming the sound using their lips and voice. The video also helps learners recognise the sound in common Spanish vocabulary and builds awareness of how these letters function in written and spoken Spanish.

With listening activities and modelling, pupils become more confident in distinguishing the appearance of the letters from their shared pronunciation — an important phonics skill when reading and writing in Spanish.

This video is designed to build foundational knowledge of Spanish pronunciation and deepen understanding of sound-letter correspondence in the target language.
