Using wire to make a sculpture

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in shaping and joining wire to create a simple sculpture. It introduces key techniques and safety tips to help children work confidently and carefully.

The video starts by showing how to handle the wire by bending, looping and joining pieces. It explains how to cut wire safely and reminds pupils to be mindful of sharp ends and moving sections.

The activity requires two 40cm lengths of wire, scissors and some masking tape. A template placed inside a plastic wallet helps pupils build their sculpture by taping the wire in place as they follow the outline. The video clearly shows how to shape the wire along the template, how to join it by twisting the ends, and how to add smaller sections for detail. Children are encouraged to measure wire against the template, leaving enough extra to twist and secure. After finishing the outline, pupils will check and refine the shape. Mistakes are easy to fix, as the wire can be adjusted or reattached as needed.
