Introducing Python

This Computing video introduces Year 6 pupils to text-based programming using Python. It builds on their previous experience with block-based coding and helps them understand that programs can also be written using words, numbers and symbols.

The video explains how key concepts such as sequencing, repetition and decision making work in the same way as block coding, but are written as lines of text. The children see examples of simple Python code and explore how programmers can read code to understand what it does. The video introduces syntax as the rules that code must follow and explains how small mistakes can cause errors. It encourages the children to begin reading and writing Python like real programmers.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing Year 5 and 6 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to develop their digital skills, explore key computing concepts and create their own digital projects.
