Introducing proportion

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to proportion—how the size of objects compares to one another in a drawing. Through clear examples, pupils learn that drawing in proportion helps make artwork look more realistic and balanced. They explore how thinking about the size and placement of different objects on the page—like a mug next to a bottle—can improve their observation and accuracy.

The video also shows that not all drawings need to be realistic. Some artists intentionally exaggerate proportions for creative or humorous effect, like drawing a giant apple next to a tiny car. This helps children understand that proportion is both a tool for accuracy and a choice for expression.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Exploring tone, texture and proportion unit. It supports pupils in developing their confidence in observational drawing.
