How design and technology helps in daily life and what it means in school as a subject

In this Design and technology video, the pupils discover how everyday objects are designed in different ways and then made using technology. The video helps Year 1 children to understand what D&T means in school and the key areas they will learn about.

The video introduces pupils to the idea that all objects we see and use in daily life have been designed and made by someone and follows the journey of a pair of shoes as an example. The shoes are designed by someone using either sketches on paper or a computer. These designs are then produced by hand or in a factory and the shoes are transported to a shop where people can buy them. The video also explains to pupils that they will have D&T lessons in school where they can design and make their own products and learn skills, such as how to build structures and mechanisms, prepare food and sew textiles. The children are encouraged to use their imagination and problem-solving skills to improve everyday objects.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
