Making a tree of life

This Art and design scheme of work video helps pupils create their own 3D tree of life artwork using paper shapes and techniques they explored in the previous lesson.

It starts by encouraging pupils to imagine what their tree will look like. Pupils then sketch out their ideas, thinking carefully about the shapes and colours they might use. The video suggests starting with the trunk and then building upwards and outwards, using paper rolls, zigzags, spirals and folds to bring the tree to life. As they work, children are reminded that their trees don’t need to match their drawings exactly. Artists often change their ideas as they go, and everyone’s tree of life will be unique.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Paper play unit.
