Greece's geography and settlements

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow History scheme of work. It explores how the geography of ancient Greece influenced the way people lived, travelled, and interacted with one another.

Pupils will discover how mountains, valleys, and seas shaped ancient Greek civilisation. They’ll learn that the mountainous landscape led to the development of independent city-states like Athens and Sparta, each with its own government, army, and way of life. Because travel across land was difficult, the sea became essential for trade, communication, and exploration. Ancient Greeks became skilled sailors, using the Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean Seas to connect with other places. By examining a topographic map, pupils will see how geography directly affected settlement, culture and conflict in ancient Greece.

History, Upper key stage 2, Year 5, What is the legacy of the ancient Greek civilisation? Lesson 1: Who were the ancient Greeks and when did they live?
