Greece's geography and settlements

This History pupil video explores how the geography of ancient Greece influenced the way people lived, travelled, and interacted with one another.

Pupils will discover how mountains, valleys and seas shaped ancient Greek civilisation. They will learn that the mountainous landscape led to the development of independent city-states like Athens and Sparta, each with its own government, army and way of life. Because travel across land was difficult, the sea became essential for trade, communication and exploration. Ancient Greeks became skilled sailors, using the Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean Seas to connect with other places. By examining a topographic map, pupils will see how geography directly affected settlement, culture and conflict in ancient Greece.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s ancient Greece resources, helping the children understand how physical geography shaped one of the world’s most influential civilisations.
